Cub Scouts tidy den with vendors' help

By JESSICA HAYSS/Inside the Turret staff writer

Fort Knox Cub Scout Pack 127 recently conducted a much-needed clean-up of its meeting room, according to Den Leader Steve Lamb.

The pack meets above the optical lab behind Ireland Army Community Hospital, which sponsors the pack.

"It wasn't hard to get the ball rolling on fixing up the meeting place after talking to Col. Carol Pierce, the new IACH commander and a strong supporter of scouting,'' said Lamb.

‘‘She has already coordinated support for many of the fixer-up projects that will be performed by the scouts.''

Clean-up began the morning of Sept. 27 with the aid of a generous donation of cleaning supplies from the commissary.

‘‘Despite a power outage and a case lot sale that morning, the commissary did a stupendous job of supporting its local scouts,'' said Lamb.

"We also have the commissary vendors to thank. With their help, the pack was able to get mops, buckets, scrub brushes, and many other cleaning items that we would have otherwise had to provide ourselves."

The meeting area's conditions and appearance were greatly improved with the help of the scouts and family volunteers who showed up.

"We had a lot of support from the community and cooperation from the scouts and their families," said Lamb.

Cubmaster Willis Madden said that, "All the folks who helped out did a great job. I'm glad to see the community supporting the scouts."

Because scouting is an unfunded and completely volunteer endeavor, Lamb pointed out, sponsors such as IACH and donations like those from the commissary are essential to the scouts' operation.
