Information in this document has been gathered by the FKSC.  This is not an official document sanctioned by Fort Knox or the US Army.  Information in this document is subject to change at any time, and the publishers of this document make no promises or guarantees that the information contained herein is the most updated information.  Portions of this document were last updated on 20 August, 2004.

Hello Scouter!!

Congratulations on your decision to find out more about bringing your Scout unit to visit Fort Knox.  The Ft. Knox Scouting Community is happy to assist you by providing you with the information you need to make your decision.  The Ft Knox area has many interesting activities to keep your scout unit busy.

Many people might think that with the heightened security on military installations in this new era, that it would be close to impossible for a Scout unit from another location to visit Ft Knox, but even now, during everyday, normal operating conditions it is still possible to visit, and even stay on post.  The following information sets forth the guidelines for entry to the post, and the procedures for eating in the Kouma Dining Facility.  It will also provide information on local facilities and attractions. There are several things to see and do, so it is recommended that you be specific about what you would like as part of your visit.

For other questions you might have that aren’t answered in this document, you can contact the Ft Knox Scouting Community through the website at www.knoxscouting.org or at knoxscouting@yahoo.com.  You can also contact the Post through the Public Affairs Office at 502-624-3351

POST OPPORTUNITIES

There are several activities, events, and attractions to visit on the Fort Knox Military Reservation.  It is not impossible to visit post and have a great time, it just takes a little planning.

SCOUT SPECIFIC

There are several opportunities on post for scouts, which you will find in some of the other sections, but one Scout Specific event held at Fort Knox is the Annual Future Leaders Day, held by the Fort Knox Scouting Community.  This event is commonly held on the first weekend after school starts at Ft Knox, (which is usually the first or second weekend on the calendar).

This event usually offers camping on site at Keyes Park, and has a multitude of booths and events for our future leaders of America.  Events range from Tiger and Daisy Scout aged events up to Boy, Girl, Venture, Explorer Scout Aged events.   An event patch is offered.  Really a great event, we hope that you can fit this into your planning.  More details can be found on the website.

PROCEDURES FOR ENTERING POST

Each organized group of 10 or more people may request a visit to the installation.  Procedures for entry to Fort Knox:

·         All gates on Fort Knox are accessed from 31W.

·         All buses must enter the Brandenburg Station Road Gate

·         Cars and vans may enter any of the operating gates (Wilson Road Gate, Chaffee Ave. Gate, Bullion Blvd. Gate, Brandenburg Station Road Gate).

·         Gate Operations - There are Department of Defense Guards, and Military Personnel guarding all entrances to Ft Knox.  These officers are responsible for inspecting each vehicle and its occupants.  Proper prior coordination with Post Points of contact (POC’s) can make this phase go more smoothly.

o       Entry to the federal military reservation constitutes consent to be searched.

o       If the vehicle is not registered on Ft Knox, it will most likely be searched as part of standard procedure.

o       Depending on the current level of security, this inspection could consist of different areas of focus and vary in the time it takes to complete, from one visit to the next.

o       If you have met the requirements outlined in this document, you should have no reason to be concerned about admission to the post.  There are, however, periods of increased security and alerts, which require the gates to be temporarily closed at times.

·         No weapons are allowed on post

·         Photographs

o       On Ft Knox, photos may only be taken inside and around the outside of the Patton Museum.

o       The Department of Treasury has its own set of guards that protect the Gold Vault.  They do not allow photo’s to be taken of the Gold Vault.

·         All individuals over the age of 18 must show photo ID

·         All drivers must show a valid driver’s license, valid registration and proof of insurance.

CAMPING

Camp Carlson Military Campground – Many Scout groups stay at our recreation area, which includes cabins and tent sites. Tent camping for 3-person and 4 to 8 person tents is available in the rugged beauty of Camp Carlson--yours to enjoy, along with the convenience of hot showers and laundry facilities. A total of 72 bunk beds are available in the Camp Carlson Group Cabins.

Camp Carlson has four fully furnished Family Cabins equipped with refrigerator, stove, a queen bed, two bunk beds, kitchen table and a mini living room. These cabins are located within easy walking distance of shower and bathroom facilities, the lake, playgrounds, and open areas. Since there are only four cabins, they tend to be reserved early for holiday weekends and during deer hunting season.

All reservations for Camp Carlson lodging facilities can be guaranteed on your Visa or Mastercard.  They ask that you try to make your reservations ninety days in advance.  Cancellations must be made at least thirty days in advance in order to receive a refund.  Scouts are responsible for the cleanup of their area. There is no charge for pets, but they must be leashed, and the owners are responsible for damages caused by their pets & cleaning up after their pets.

We can not make reservations for you, but you make your own arrangements by calling 502-624-4836. There is a fee for this, and you can find more info at: http://www.knoxmwr.com/Rec/campCarlson.asp .

Other Possibilities - In the past some visiting units have hooked up with Ft Knox units and made other camping arrangements, which have resulted in a lower cost to the visiting units.

PROCEDURES FOR EATING AT THE DINING FACILITY

Use of a Post Dining Facility can be arranged for your unit.  Visitors are limited to one meal in the dining facility and one meal of MREs during a visit.  You must request an exception to policy (the policy is no civilians are allowed to eat in the dining facility).  This request must include:

·         the total number of people to use the dining facility.

·         You may estimate the number of people and adjust by giving the post an accurate count at one week out.

·         If the number changes and post does not receive the information the guests will be liable to pay for the meals ordered, but not eaten.

On POST Activities

Military Training

There are actually certain military training events / activities that can be visited by Scouts at Ft Knox with the proper prior coordination.  If a request is made in writing to the public affairs office, 12-weeks in advance, visiting the below Ft Knox activities can be requested:

·         The Tank Driver Simulator where new soldiers learn to drive tanks through use of computer-generated scenarios.

·         The Close Combat Tactical Trainer and the SIMNET are both computer-generated scenarios where young soldiers learn to operate tanks and vehicles.

·         The Weaponeer is a laser-sighted trainer for the M16 (rifle).

·         Maintenance classes where visitors can observe as soldiers take M1 Abrams Tanks and Bradleys apart and repair them can be visited.

·         You may also observe a basic training class - this is dependent upon what the class is doing, but we will select a class that is interesting to observe.

At each of these facilities visitors will receive a briefing explaining the operation of the facility and then a tour of the facility.  Facility access is dependent upon use by training soldiers.  Ft Knox can only accommodate visiting these activities if you plan to visit them on a normal duty day (not available on weekends, holidays, or training holidays (which usually fall on the Friday before a three-day weekend)).  The public affairs office must have a written request for exactly what it is your group wants to see.

FUN

On the weekends your group may use several of the Post facilities without making a formal request.
